Popis: | 102 Taiwan is an island with different ethnic groups and a rich history. Our ancestors worked very hard to plant their seeds and roots in this land, and their efforts can be traced in history. The history of Taiwan is a history of immigration from China to Taiwan. Today, the studies of history focus on the narratives recorded in the history books. They emphasize an objective description and exploration of a historical event. Different researchers aim to recreate the historical facts. A historical fiction emphasizes the portrayal of characters and the exploration of humanity. Using real history as its background, with fictional characters and plots, a historical memory is recreated through literature. Under the protection of a fictional world, a work of literature records the realities known and experienced by the author, and reflects on the meaning of an event. The efforts behind the writing lie in reminiscence and understanding. This thesis focuses on Prosperity for All Ethnic Groups (Zudou tonrong), a historical novel by Xiangqi Wang, which is based on “Dingxiajiao Conflict,” an intra-ethnic battle in Mengjia 160 years ago. Through Wang’s novel, this historical event, barely known to the public, becomes a portal to our further knowledge of the hardships faced and overcome by our ancestors. This thesis is divided into six chapters. The first chapter is the “Introduction,” which describes the motivation, purpose and methodology of this research. It also describes the definition and genre of a historical novel, the scope of this research and the structure of this thesis. The second chapter is “Xiangqi Wang and his works,” which provides biographical information on how Wang became a writer. It also explores the development and psychological changes of his career as a writer. The third chapter is “The Real History behind Prosperity for All Ethnic Groups,” which explains the meaning, reasons and influences of ethnic battles. It also describes the reasons, process and results of the Dingxiajiao Conflict to compare the differences between the real event and the fictional description in the novel. The fourth chapter “Themes of Prosperity for All Ethnic Groups” explores different themes presented in the novel, including the spirit of exploration, safeguarding of religious beliefs, tolerance of different ethnic groups, and promotion of ethics. These themes represent the hardworking spirit of our ancestors, which would inspire future generations. The fifth chapter, “The Styles of Prosperity for All Ethnic Groups,” analyzes the writing styles of the novel from its presentations of characters, language and narratives through time and space. The last chapter is the “Conclusion”; it discusses the significance and value of Prosperity for All Ethnic Groups in Taiwanese historical novels. |
