Content Analysis on Concept of Democracy in Social Studies Textbook of Elementary School

The purpose of this research was to analyze the concept of democracy in social studies textbooks of elementary school in order to understand the amount and content of the concept of democracy and to discuss the concept of democracy in social studies textbooks of elementary school. The method of this research was content analysis. Social studies textbooks licensed by the Ministry of Education in 2013 were investigated, and the versions were Nan-I, Kang Hsuan and Han Lin, all from volume one to eight, 24 volumes in total. The first thing was to research and refer to foreign and domestic documents and acquire expert advices in order to build up the analysis items of the research. Then according to the concept of democracy of items to make the quantification and the materialization analysis for social studies textbooks of elementary school. The results of the research are as the followings: 1.In comparison with various editions of social studies textbooks of elementary school, the edition of Nan-I has the most representations. 2.Social studies textbooks of elementary school pay the most attention to the main category of “knowledge of democracy”, and pay the least attention to the main category of “value of democracy”. 3.Social studies textbooks of elementary school pay the most attention to the subcategory of “political organization”, and pay the least attention to the sub-category of “history of democracy”. 4.In comparison with various editions, the most times and proportion of mentioning of the concept of democracy is slightly different, Nan-I and Han Lin editions are concentrated in the sixth textbooks, Kang Hsuan edition is concentrated in the seventh textbooks. 5.In the main category of “knowledge of democracy”, three editions all focus on “political organization”. 6.In the main category of “value of democracy”, four sub-topics in each editions have almost no differences in frequency of display, especially Nan-I textbooks. 7.In the main category of “skill of democracy”, three editions all focus on “citizen participation”. Based on the results of this study, some suggestions have been proposed as a reference for teachers, publishers, and future researchers.
