A Study on the Behavioral Intention of Smoking Cessation Among Middle-aged and Senior Citizens

Due to the extension of the life and the increasing of chronic disorders of the elder, in order to promote the health condition of the elder through attenuation of chronic disorders and reduce the financial burden of health care policy, how to prevent the elder from smoking has become the important elder-caring issue recently. Nevertheless, the researches about smoking cessation of the elder are little known to us, given that most of the subjects of related researches are the mid-aged people. The purpose of this study is to investigate the behavioral intention of smoking, and the theory of planned behavior adding brand image construct was used to build the research framework and to explore the behavioral intention factors of smoking of the elder. In this study, a questionnaire survey was used and the research subjects were the people aged 45 and over living in Nantou County. 375 valid questionnaires were collected, AMOS 18.0 software was used to verify and analyze the research model fit. It’s showed that the attitude toward smoking cessation has no significant influence on the behavioral intention of smoking. In addition, 「subjective altitude」, 「perceived behavioral control」, and tobacco hazard perception have significant influence on the behavioral intention of smoking. Notably, among subjective altitude, perceived behavioral control, and tobacco hazard perception, the extent of influence caused by perceived behavioral control was the highest, whereas the extent of influence caused by subjective altitude was the lowest. Besides, subjective altitude and tobacco hazard perception have positive influence on the elders’ attitude toward smoking cessation. Overall study model effectively and efficiently explain could 64% of Behacioral Mtcution of smoking in the elders. Keywords: Smoking cessation, Theory of planned behavior, Tobacco hazard perception
