Popis: | 102 Research for the Cultural Landscape of Chi-Hsien 3rd Road Yan-Cheng District in Kaohsiung City Abstract Chi-Hsien 3rd Road, Yan-Cheng District in Kaohsiung City is a special area as it has continued to see new changes in its landscape with each government leader. The different periods of folk life have created memories. The ocean is the main thoroughfare for all circulation, and due to the advantages of the natural environment of the harbor, Kaohsiung was able to be in contact with foreign civilizations from very early times due to the arrival of the invaders and immigrants in Takao (old name for Kaohsiung). Since the beginning of the 16th century, Kaohsiung has been through many different jurisdictions of governance, from the Han Chinese from China, The Dutch from Europe, the Japanese of East Asia and then returning power to the Han Chinese. These foreign immigrants injected Kaohsiung with mutually different cultures, allowing it to establish a different developmental foundation. Presently, we can still find the multi-cultural evidences in the areas surrounding Kaohsiung harbor. The landscape of Chi-Hsien 3rd Road began with the snow-white fields of bay salt, then to the sludge and mire from building the harbor during the Japanese Occupation. It then had the beginning of a road, where the block and street system were well planned, which led to citizens moving into the area. Japanese and Taiwanese capitalists invested in land development and commerce. The salt fields became the new street, shops and the amusement park were all in place. As it was destroyed in World War II, the block activities temporarily went through a lull; however, the global situation underwent a great change. With more competitive power, US troops and sailors increased the value of the harbor again. Instantly, all types of people began flooding to the Chi-Hsien 3rd road area. They brought in a myriad of imports from different cultures, and Chi-Hsien found its opportunity for revival. It was during this time that the area became the Most Benevolent Community. As people later started leaving the area, the bustling streets slowly began to disappear and opportunities began to fade. The community is facing challenges again. Fortunately, the government leaders advocate “Maritime Capital Kaohsiung” policies, and it is bringing a new face to the old buildings -- old landscapes are being renewed. The cultural landscape is changing from commercial gains to leisure and entertainment. People and power are the key influences of the prosperity and decline of Chi-Hsien 3rd Road. It was once a bustling marketplace, but has a different cultural landscape today. We will have to wait and see if it will be a prosperous part of Kaohsiung in the future.
