Several applications of Phthalate Esters (PAEs) in agriculture farming, industrial processes and consumer products have resulted in the ubiquitous presence of these chemicals in the environments. Soil samples nearby industrial areas were collected from agricultural fields under different utilizations in the Kaohsiung metropolitan areas. In 23 sampling sites soil samples were collected from agricultural fields of commercial purpose (AC), the home garden agricultural fields (HG), and the roadside (RS). Agricultural soils were analyzed for six PAEs compounds including Dimethyl phthalate (DMP), Diethyl phthalate (DEP), Di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP), Benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP), Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and Di-n-octyl phthalate (DnOP) by GC/MS. The results show that the ranges of PAEs concentrations in AC, HG and RS were 0.10–1.61 mg/kg dw, 0.07 – 0.44 mg/kg dw and 0.10 – 0.66 mg/kg dw, respectively. Reliability of these data was supported by Matrix Spike Recovery ≥ 70% (trustable range is 80% - 120%) and RSD ≤ 30%. The result indicating that AC soils have the highest contamination of PAEs, follows by HG soils, and the RS soils, even these two sampling zones are close to industrial areas. Therefore, the PAEs contamination impacts from agricultural activities seem more concerned than the industrial activities effects. The comparison of this PAEs contaminations issue with some studies in foreign countries found the PAEs concentrations are not as significant as the others except the study in UK. Moreover, the comparison with the CP-51 New York DEC soil cleanup standard (USA), suggesting that no remediation concern in these sites. Nevertheless, the wide spread and the accumulation of PAEs in soils of agricultural land in Kaohsiung metropolitan area has become a great threat to the neighboring environmental quality and human health; thus deserve a great attention in future studies.
