A Study of the Criteria for Evaluating Children's Drawings in competitions: An Examination of Awarded Works of Fifth and Sixth Graders in National Student Art Competition, 2002-2012

Popis: | 102 Studying awarded works from National Student Art Competition, the researcher intends to analyze the performances and painting styles of the winners as a way to identify preference of the judges and possible trends in mainstream art education in Taiwan. All the awarded works of 5-6th graders, 140 of them, from 2002 to 2012 are included in the study. Content analysis, document analysis and interviews are conducted to reach the research goals. In terms of visual forms, this study finds that judges appreciate works with the following characteristics: (a) the forms and styles of the works meet the mental and drawing development of 5-6th graders; (b) themes are clear and the compositions are balanced; (c) painterly mode, recession, unity, closed form, and relative clarity constitute the overall style of the works; (d) the performance of the rewarded paintings tend to express sense, sensibility and are skilled; (e) the paintings are characterized by local-cultural themes; (f) the paintings are with unique styles; (g) the students are skillful in using of materials. In addition, from a socio-cultural perspective, the researcher also finds that (a) daily life and sport are the frequent subject matters; (b) multiple local cultures are often chosen as well; (c) the content of paintings are embedded with narration; (d) fewer paintings are to explore imaginative themes; (e) the works are of rich aesthetic presentatrion. The findings of the study can help art educators and judges of art competitions to reflect upon children’s art education and the meaning of children's art competitions. |
