This action research aims to investigate the effectiveness of applying discovery teaching method to improve senior high scehool students’ attitude toward science and their scientfic literacy—identify scientific issues, use scientific evidence, and explain phenomena scientifically. Based on the findings of Programme for Internatioanl Student Assessment (PISA), the citizens’ scientific literacy is one of the indices of the achievement and performance of a nation. Bruner (1961) asserted that through discovery teaching method, teachers can lead learners to obtain the capability of finding and exploring problems, problem solving and thinking independently. In order to conduct this study, the researcher selected two chpaters from Basic Chemisty for Grade 10 as teaching materials and then used discovery teaching method to instruct the target students for a year. The subjects were 38 grade-10 students of a private senior high school in easten Taiwan. Each participant took the same chemical test of PISA 2006 and then applied Attitude Toward Science Scale in the pretest and the posttest. The results reveal that discovery teaching method significantly improve the subjects’ chemistry capability. Meanwhile, regarding to the outcomes of Attitude Toward Science Scale, the development of participants’ attitude toward science and their scientific literacy is statistically significant. The researcher suggests that scientific teachers of senior high schools would utilize discovery teaching method to foster their students’ positive attitude toward science and their scientific capability.
