Popis: | 102 This quasi-experimental study aimed to investigate the effects of grammar consciousness-raising (GCR) instruction on Taiwanese junior high school students learning the English passive construction and the relative effects of GCR and the traditional grammar instruction (TI) usually adopted in the EFL classrooms in Taiwan. The participants were 59 ninth graders from two mixed-level classes in central Taiwan. During the instructional treatment lasting for five 45-minute periods, one class (n=31) received GCR instruction, in which input-oriented and inductive activities for students’ discovery of rules were mainly provided. The other class (n=28) received TI instruction, in which output-based and deductive practice was the main focus. A grammar test used as the pretest and the posttest consisting of a comprehension and a production sections was administered to all the participants before and after instruction. The results showed that GCR and TI resulted in similar learning outcomes for the students’ overall learning, comprehension and production of the English passive construction. These findings suggest that GCR instruction effectively benefit junior high school students learning this target structure and be used in Taiwan EFL classrooms as a reference or an option for grammar instruction. |
