Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of quadriceps muscle activity (MA) and physiological responses in water and on land, when participants performed the knee extension exercise (KE) with various cadences. Method: 17 young female were recruited, asked to perform KE with non-weight bearing (0 kg) and weight bearing (2.4kg) in four kinds of cadences (30, 50,70, 90 beats per minute, bpm) in water and on land. Heart rate (HR) and rate of perceived exertion (RPE) were recorded before and after each cadence, MA, blood flow (BF) and total saturation index (TSI) of the quadriceps muscle were real-time measured during the exercise by electromyography (EMG) and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). All parameters were analyzed by paired t-test in different environments and one-way ANOVA among different cadences, respectively. Result: The velocity of movement at 70 bpm with non-weight bearing, the changes of MA, RPE, BF and TSI in water were similar with on land. The velocity of movement at 90 bpm with weight bearing, the changes of MA, RPE and BF change in water were similar with on land. However, TSI in water was significantly lower than that on land (p = .013). The change of HR in water was significantly higher than on land at 70 and 90 bpm (p = .017, p = .004). Conclusion: Non-weight bearing condition, MA responses at 70 bpm in water were similar with those on land. Weight bearing condition, MA responses at 90 bpm in water were similar with those on land.
