Many governments and international organizations have been setting their CSR standards and regulations in response to the growing request from the general public for better environmental protection and social development. In this study, the listed companies in Taiwan’s construction industry are the research samples to explore the current development of CSR implementation among these samples using GRI indexes such as corporate governance, environmental protection and social development. In addition, this research is intended to find out the process and difficulties in CSR introduction among those companies that have published their CSR reports. Through interviews and webpage browsing of the listed companies in the construction industry in Taiwan, basic understanding of the current CRS implementation of the samples was obtained in this study. It is found in this study that the webpages of the company samples mostly information about their financial conditions and corporate governance charters with very little information about their CSR implementation. The webpages of real estate developers contain mostly information about their real estate projects and urban renewal while those of construction companies contain mostly information about their HR, employee welfare and employee safety/health promotion. Moreover, among the samples in this study, it is found the CSR concepts of even the exemplary companies are still revolving around social participation or social charity. This finding indicates the CSR concepts of the exemplary large-size companies are lagging behind those of their counterparts in the other industries, let alone the small- and mid-size companies in the construction industry. Last but not least, there are only two companies in Taiwan’s construction industry that have published their CSR reports and they show strong willingness to continue publishing their CSR reports. This finding reflects the meaningfulness of publishing CSR reports. |
