This Thesis budded from Foot’s “Morality as a System of Hypothetical Imperatives.” Foot’s moral system theory was based on elaborations of “hypothetical imperatives” exclusion from Kant’s “Grundlegung zur Metaphysik der Sitten”. Author will tackle the divergence of views from both theories and attempt to utilize the reasons and motivations of moral behaviors as a method to examine the root disagreement in both theories. It will also attempt to discuss “the principle of ethical practice” as reconsideration of “Why should we be moral?” Chapter II will analyze the reasons why Foot rejected the idea of establishing moral laws based on categorical imperatives stated in “Morality as a System of Hypothetical Imperatives” and further discuss the specifics from Foot’s moral system which was built upon hypothetical imperatives. Chapter III will clarify Good Will, Obligations, Hypothetical Imperatives and Categorical Imperatives from “Grundlegung zur Metaphysik der Sitten”. This will be the base in analysis and comparisons of the differences between Foot and Kant’ theories. Author will examine the dissimilarities between Foot and Kant’ theories to further understand the different positions of both in related contemporary trends, discussions on moral theories, and analysis of moral theories comparisons. Lastly, using the concept of Kant’s later moral philosophy “Moral Sentiment”, author will attempt to bring Foot’s theory into Kant’s moral philosophy. The existence of morality is necessary; however, the methods to practice ethically are still uncertain. The purpose of this thesis is to search for a compatible path for Foot’s Virtue Ethics and Kant’s Deontological Ethics. Edification of moral sentiment makes subjective purpose tend to objective moral law, therefore, there is a feasible way to moral practice.
