Detection of latent fingermarks on paper by wet, dipping treatments with indanedione solution has been used for years. But for some sample, such as thermal paper or fragile paper will be damage by dipping organic solvents, particularly polar solvents. Recent year, the use of vacuum deposition for development of fingermarks has been reported. In this study, an equipment designed by Fingerprint Division of Criminal Investigation Bureau, which has heating source and vacuum pump, has been applied for development of fingerprints. The method involves hanging sample above the indanedione solution or heating source with dispersed indanedione particles in the vacuum chamber, and then indanedione reacts with amino acid of paper. To investigate the effectiveness of fingerprint development by the variable factors include solution concentration, the temperature of chamber, vacuum degree, and the temperature of heating source. After indanedione evaporated in chamber, the sample developed fingerprints of fluorescence. The vacuum approach is applicable for fingermakrs development on thermal paper or fragile paper.
