A Content Analysis of Integrating International Education with the Context of Elementary English Textbooks in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and South Korea

The purpose of the study aims for studying the content of elementary English textbooks whether they relate to any international education from grade three to grade six in East Asia. By using Content Analysis Method to analyze total six versions of English textbooks in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and South Korea in six major categories and eighteen secondary categories to compare the differences of each version. The result will assist textbook editors to arrange the pages of the books and for English teachers to merge the international education issues into the curriculum. The results are as the following: First, the overall, South Korean English textbooks contain more international education issues. Second, international education issues in English textbooks in Taiwan and in South Korea are more related to lives and more various in reading, but the articles are shorter and more formal. Comparing them to the versions of textbooks in Singapore and Hong Kong, not only the contents of reading are more diverse, but the length of the articles are longer; especially in Singapore’s textbooks, there are more characteristics in realization, complexity and image quality in reading. Third, the differences of international education issues in contents are that the ones in Singapore textbooks are more completed and editions in Hong Kong and South Korea are the second. Three editions of English books in Taiwan contain the least international issues’. Taiwanese versions lack the most in “international characters,” “international academy interaction,” “international view of lives,” “world issues,” “human and technology” and “international participation.” Fourth, within six editions of elementary English textbooks, there is more “international knowledge” but less “world-renowned topics” in the English textbooks. In conclusion, there are suggestions to the editors of elementary English textbooks, to future curriculum planning and researchers.
