Synthesis of Polystyrene Composite with Nano-scale Gold Particles via Anionic Polymerization

This work mainly use anionic polymerization to synthesize CH3S-polystyrene and CH3S-polystyrene-SH. First, we synthesized the thiomethyl styrene monomer. Then we synthesized the functional polystyrene by anionic polymerization. Finally, we used methanol or ethylene sulfide as end-functionalization agent to quench the polymer chain. Through the bonding between gold metal and the sulfur atom, gold nanoparticle/ polystyrene nanocomposite was made with the addition and reduction of gold solution. The effects on the size of gold nanoparticles of the amount of polymer and the type of functional group were observed. The composite has been analyzed by GPC、1H-NMR、EDS、TEM、UV-Vis、TGA and DSC for details. Data indicate that adding the more polymers into the system results in smaller size of gold particles and that polymers with thiol group disperse gold particles better than polymers with thiomethyl group only.
