In the surgical health care system that emphasizes teamwork, safety and quality of anesthesia jobs are the keys to success of the surgical operation and is also the protection of patients’ lives. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate clinical anesthesia nurses for the current situation of job characteristics, operating frequency, risk perception levels and its related factors of anesthesia jobs. This study was also to survey the correlation between individual background variables and risk perception. We look forward to understand the risk perception of the nursing staff during high-risk anesthesia process, and provide the results of this study to the head of anesthesia department. We hope that the head of anesthesia department give necessary assistance to nursing staff to reduce the risk of anesthesia jobs. Research tool of this study was questionnaire contained individual background variables, job characteristics cognition, job frequency, and risk perception items. A total of 216 copies of questionnaire were distributed to the research participants of this study, with 183 valid copies received (the validity of response rate was 85%). By running the statistical package for the social science (SPSS version 12.0), the collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, an independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Person correlation. The ages of most subjects are between 30-40 years old, accounting for 50.3%. The educational degree of most subjects was university (including four-year and two-year technical college), accounting for 62.3%. Married and unmarried persons are about half and half. The percentage of 1-5 years and 6-10 years seniority are 35% and 23%, respectively. Most subjects work in medical centers accounting for 48.1%. Most subjects (65%) receive anesthetic training from their own hospital. The common anesthetic mode is “doing anesthesia jobs under the instruction of anesthesiologists”, accounting for 57.4%. In the aspect of individual background variables, including ages, anesthetic seniority, hospital classification, training modes, there are significant differences in job characteristic cognition, risk perception, and job frequency. Overall, job variety, autonomy, feedback of job characteristics showed significant correlation with risk perception. In addition, doing anesthesia under the instruction of anesthesiologists, younger (not more than 30 years old), senior (not exceeding one year seniority) anesthesia nurses affirm their jobs as variety, important, and autonomy. In the aspect of anesthesia process, there are higher risk perception levels in preparation, execution, termination, and recovery room stages. However, job execution frequencies of anesthesia execution and termination were low, and frequency of recovery room was high for senior (not exceeding one year seniority) anesthesia nurses. Head of anesthesia department should provides junior anesthesia nurses with necessary assistance, especially in preparation, execution, termination, and recovery room stages of anesthesia process to promote the safety of anesthesia care. Furthermore, the risk perception of regional hospital anesthesia nurses is low, but job execution frequency is high in filling anesthesia quality record and recovery room stages of anesthesia process. These events will lead to anesthesia errors. Head of anesthesia department should strengthen supervision of anesthesia jobs to promote the safety of anesthesia process.
