Popis: | 101 The aim of this study attempts to investigate EFL beginners’ reading progress and process, and their perceptions after using e-dictionary to take online notes in reading e-texts. Two intact classes of 52 junior high school students participated in the study and were grouped into two groups: the control group received onsite instruction while the experimental group engaged in online reading instruction. The collected data were analyzed at the end of this study: (1) the pre-, mid-, and post-test scores were calculated by paired sample t-test to examine students’ reading progress; (2) students’ log files and trace results of an online system were analyzed by content analysis to compare the differences between the students with progress and no progress in their reading processes; and (3) the contents of a questionnaire were analyzed by content analysis to understand students perceptions toward using e-dictionary to take notes in reading e-text. Results of this study indicated that EFL beginners in the experimental group made significant progress in reading comprehension after the intervention of online note-taking by using e-dictionary in reading. Second, the result revealed the differences between the students with progress and no progress in using e-dictionary to make online annotation. The students who made progress actively utilized the strategies of e-dictionary use and online note-taking to comprehend the texts, more particularly in reviewing and reflecting their and many peers’ word lists, online note-taking, and reading process. However, the students who made no progress passively engrossed in the online system since they reviewed their and few peers’ word lists and annotations and gave suggestions. Third, the results of the questionnaire revealed that all students agreed that keeping online notebooks through e-dictionary was beneficial for their reading comprehension, and 86% of them showed positive attitude on the helpfulness of online note-taking in reading. This study is important in exploring the reading effectiveness of using e-dictionary and note-taking (online annotation) strategies on EFL beginners, and provides English teachers with a better understanding of what EFL beginners’ perceived the usefulness of e-dictionary and note-taking. |
