A Relationship of Students' Expectation and Industries' Expectation on Mentoring Function in Internship Programs- Take the Students of College of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science at National Taipei University of Technology as an Example

The goal of the study is to explore student expectations, industry expectations of college students off-campus internships and the relationship of teacher-apprentice functions in order to understand the expectations of off-campus internships by college students and the industries. Also covered is finding a more suitable way of revision of the off-campus system through the expectations of both sides of the students and the industries to be used as a reference for future expansion of the practice. To achieve the aim of this study, we used the questionnaire approach and resorted to stratified cluster random sampling on current students. The questionnaires were distributed to 19 classes. There were 942 questionnaires in total and 716 questionnaires were returned. After eliminating 5 invalid questionnaires, there were 711 valid questionnaires and the effective return rate is 75.48%. With off-campus internship institutions, 53 questionnaires were sent to middle to high level executives in the HR department. Among them 36 questionnaires were returned. After eliminating one invalid questionnaire, there were 35 valid questionnaires and the effective return rate is 66.04%. The statistical methods employed are descriptive statistics, one sample t-test, independent sample t-test, and multiple regression analysis. The conclusions reached are as follows. 1. Student expectations and manifestation of teacher-apprentice functions reach a medium-high level for students in College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at National Taipei University of Technology taking part in off-campus internship programs. 2. Industry expectations and manifestation of teacher-apprentice functions reach a medium-high level for students in College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at National Taipei University of Technology taking part in off-campus internship programs. 3. The various layers of student expectations of the various layers of teacher-apprentice functions all show significant positive predictions. 4. Industry expectations of the experience gained in off-campus internship show significant positive predictions for career development. 5. Students show better recognition of teacher-apprentice functions compared with executives in the industries in terms of social support and overall teacher-apprentice functions. 6. Students expect that off-campus internship institutions should offer: work environment introduction and orientation, career development opportunity, and opportunity to become a formal employee after the internship. On the other hand what the industries expect from the students are excellent and active work attitude, high degree of work motivation, and doing the job well by following existing directions.
