Geometric imperfection occurs in steel structural members, such as beams and columns. This paper studied the effects of the shape of the initial geometric imperfection to the behavior of H-shaped steel beams. A three-dimensional finite element model using ABAQUS was established. Five methods were used to assign the initial imperfection shape of the beam and the effects of the different imperfection shapes to the behavior of the beam were investigated. In the first method, buckling shape of the first buckling mode of beam loaded by single curvature equal end moments was used. Second, buckling shape of the first buckling mode of beam loaded by concentrated load at the top flange of mid-span was used. Third, buckling shape of the first buckling mode of beam loaded by double curvature equal end moments was used. Fourth, the deflected shape of the beam loaded by minor axis equal end moments was used. Fifth, the deflected shape of the beam loaded by both major and minor axis equal end moments was used. It is found that use of buckling shape of the first buckling mode of beam loaded by double curvature equal end moments and the deflected shape of the beam loaded by minor axis equal end moments as the initial imperfection shape has more significant effect to the beam behavior than the other methods with the same amount of initial out-of-straightness in some cases.
