Effect of modified Shaker exercise on swallowing function and quality of life for the elderly

This study investigated the effect of modified Shaker exercise on swallowing function and quality of life for the elderly. Twenty-six elderly were recruited in this study (65-89 yr). Based on age and type of diet, the subjects were divided into two groups and then randomly assign to either the modified Shaker exercise experimental group (n=13) or the traditional Shaker exercise control group (n=13). Each training exercise lasted for six weeks. During pre- and post-training, the participants’ average peak values and the duration of submental muscle sEMG. were assessed. The average duration of head lifting was also collected every week and the participants’ feedback about each exercise was recorded. In addition, all participants completed a questionnaire on swallowing quality of life. Results show that in modified Shaker exercise group, the duration for head lifting increased progressively.
