From 1970 to 2004, global CO2 emissions had increased about 80 percent and residential energy use was one of the main causes (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, 2007). To promote residential energy saving, Taiwan had imposed Energy Efficiency Grade Labeling on refrigerators and air-conditioners since July 2010. However, so far little research has examined the public understanding of such a label and how it influences the intent to buy household appliances. This study used a conjoint experiment to explore how three attributes might affect people’s intent to buy refrigerators. The attributes were efficiency ratings (Grade1, Grade 3, Grade 4), price (NT$23,000, NT$25,000, NT$28,000), and MIT Smile Label (labeled or not labeled). This study also ran ordinal regressions to test how power saving habits, beliefs about electricity use and power saving, and demographical variables would influence people’s intent to buy energy-efficient refrigerators. A convenience sample of 170 Kaohsiung residents aged from 20 to 70 took part in this study. Results suggest that people are more willing to buy refrigerators that have high efficiency rating or MIT smile label, or low price. Additionally, respondents with middle family income were less willing to buy energy-efficient refrigerators than those with high family income.
