The Study of All-Fiber Mach–Zehnder Interferometer Sensing Sensitivity on Coupling Structure and Manufacture Process

In the study, to understand the effect of sensitivity of conical light de-coupling structure and processing of All-fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (AF-MZI), by using fusion splicer (FITEL, S175), with electrical discharge machining approach on standard single mode fiber (Corning, SMF-28) to fabricate conical de-coupling structure. Three kinds of processing of normal fusion-stretching (NFS), multiple fusions without stretching (MFWS) and semi fusion-stretching (SFS) were designed, various conical de-coupling structures were fabricated, through the processing to explore effects of geometry shape of de-coupling structure and fiber core-cladding materials on sensitivity variations through thermal effect to change refractive index distributions. The fabricated AF-MZI was processed by sucrose aqueous solution measuring of Refractive Index Unit (RIU) from 1.333 to 1.420 RIU, through spectrograph wave trough wandering phenomenon instantly observed, thereby sensitivity was calculated. As shown in the results, sensitivities of semi fusion-stretching and multiple fusions without stretching processing are higher than normal fusion-stretching, the reasons could be rested on materials modification through thermal effect on fiber core-cladding of de-coupling structure, the more homogeneous of refractive index distribution, the more reflective of light to penetrate through fiber cladding and exterior environment; in the part of geometry shape, observing the conical angles of optimal sensitivity relative to each processing at low refractive index, high refractive index, and full segment refractive index, it was found that optimal sensitivity trend is at conical angle of 25 degree.
