This study focused on the relationships among the family rules, communication stances, and emotional intelligence in college students. The researcher recruited 455 college students from seven schools across northern, central, and southern regions in Taiwan. The Family rules profile, the Interpersonal communication profile, and the emotional intelligence inventory were used in this study. The researcher applied descriptive analysis, one way ANOVA, Pearson product-moment correlation, biserial correlation and multiple stepwise regression analysis to analyze data. Research findings were as follow: 1.College students had medium to good condition of family rules and EQ, and more than half of college students used the congruent communication stance(57.8%). 2.Gender difference: As a whole, Females significantly had more positive, healthy family rules than male. In the level of “expressiveness and connection” and the “monitoring”, females scored significantly higher than males, whereas males scored higher than females in the level of “constraining feelings”. Females who used the congruent communication stance were more than males, while males who used incongruent communication stance were more than females. No emotional intelligence were found between male and female. 3.Differences in birth order:College students with different birth order had no significant differences in the family rules, and the communication stance, but the emotional intelligence. As a whole, college students who were born the eldest had significantly higher than the middle child in the part of “emotional intelligence” and “social interaction awareness and understanding”. 4.The family rules total scores had significantly positive correlation with emotional intelligence including “kindness”, “expressiveness and connection”, and “monitoring” levels, but “constraining feelings” had negative correlation. 5.The family rules total scores had a significantly positive correlation with the communication stances as well as with “kindness”, “expressiveness and connection”, and “monitoring” levels, but “constraining feelings” had negative correlation. 6.The communication stances had significant positive correlation with all the levels of the emotional intelligence. 7.The communication stances, Kindness, Constraining feelings and Sharing parental emotion could effectively predict the whole emotional intelligence, accounted for total variance of 35.7%. According to the findings, the researcher provided some suggestions to college students, teachers, counselors and parents as well as addressed research issues for future studies.
