This study investigated the effects of different fertilization on the seeding growth of two coastal wind-breaking forest-Scaevola hainanensis Forst. f. ex Vahl and Messerschmidia argentea (L.) Johnston. We applied three kinds of fertilizer -CO(NH2)2 (nitrogenous fertilizer), Ca(H2PO4)2 (phosphate fertilizer) and KCl (potash fertilizer) to test growth characteristics. There were thirteen combinations of fertilization treatments to apply, including four levels of nitrogenous (20, 80, 140 and 200kg/ha), threelevels of phosphate (20, 80 and 140 kg/ha) andonelevelof potash fertilizer at 120 kg/ha and the controlled. We observed the growth and morphology changes of seeding during the test period and determined the physiological characteristics including the dry weight of vegetative organs and plants and content of nutrients at the end of the eight-month test. We found that the fertilizershave major impacts on the seeding height and dry weight of Scaevola hainanensis Forst. f. ex Vahl: after applying nitrogenous fertilizer its shoot height and stem diameter were impeded however the dry weight increase facilitated. For Messerschmidia argentea (L.) Johnston., the effects are on seeding height and the dry weight of roots: applying nitrogenous and phosphate fertilizers promotes the growth of seeding height and stems. Regarding the nutrient density of the plant body, the nitrogen density of the roots of Scaevola hainanensis Forst. f. ex Vahl was increased because of the main effects and the interactions of nitrogenous and phosphate fertilizers which helps the growth of its roots. With the increased use of the nitrogenous fertilizer, the nitrogen density of Messerschmidia argentea (L.) Johnston. also increases which helps the growth of leaves, stems and roots. Through the Dickson quality index diagram, analyzing critical nutrient concentration diagram and diagnosis and recommendation integrated system (DRIS) table, it shows that the best results for Scaevola hainanensis Forst. f. ex Vahl can be obtained by applying 200kg/ha of nitrogenous and 80kg/ha of phosphate fertilizers. For Messerschmidia argentea (L.) Johnston., 140 kg/ha of nitrogenous and 140 kg/ha of phosphate fertilizers. This data can be used as the reference for future applications of fertilizers of the coastal wind-breaking forest.
