Various media and different perspectives can be used to obtain authentic information about the living environments we grew up in. In addition to the textual descriptions, figures can better shape people’s recognition and perception of community. Figures are not just about interpreting the appearances of objects, but mainly reinterpreting and reproducing them in line with the comprehensions and feelings of readers after understanding and experiencing the characteristics of objects. This curriculum plans to describe the experiences and memories of the subjects by making cultural maps of the communities, which are relatively close to the learning situation of middle-school students since the map represent the interlaced relationships with pictures and texts to interpret the real world into an easy-understanding picture. This paper integrates the creation concept of the community map and Green Map to guide students in understanding the communities they live in, learning how the real activities form the theme story, so as to develop the teaching activities such as drawing the cultural map of the communities. Moreover, it also reconstructs the spatial scenes of various districts in Taichung City via collecting both old and new information, i.e. by accessing to the “artistic mood” using “figures”, to make the cultural mapping curriculum a design operation in the form of pictures and images. With the components of the self-made teaching plan and study lists, together with the documents like observation records, students’ works, interviews with students and reflective journals, the author explores the teaching strategies involving drawing of cultural maps of communities suitable for the higher vocational students, so as to learn how the curriculum influences the students in learning the community cultures, such as the ability of acknowledging and observing the community surroundings, their affections and values for community cultures, as well as the ability of participating in solving environmental issues. The author also concludes and reflects the learning results via after-class questionnaires, to present better and more effective planning guidelines that facilitate the implementation of the curriculum in the future.
