A Study of Conceptual Change of Ninth-Grade Students in Translations among Representations Integrating into Inquiry Instructional Strategy in The Torque Unit

This study aims at utilizing translations among representions,which integrating into inquiry instructional strategy, to development the teaching materials in the torque unit. Using quasi-experimental research method to investigate students' learning effectiveness, the concept of the translation situation as well as the situation of the translations among representations for the experimental group.the subjects of the study were from two classes,which included 63 ninth-grade students, in junior high school in Changhua. The experimental group was taught by the inquiry instruction strategy of integrating into translations among representions,which is designed by the researcher. Besides, the control group was taught by lecturing, questioning and the demonstration experiment teaching in the version junior materials of Hanlin Press. In a week before teaching,the experimental group and the control group had taken the pretest of proficiency test,the pretest of two-stage diagnosis test in the misconceptions of the torque.Next,the experimental group and the control group had taken the post-test of proficiency test,the post-test of two-stage diagnosis test in the misconceptions of the torque and the characterization of translation test for the the experimental group’s students in a week after teaching. The data were analyzed by statistical analysis. Accoding to results of this study,showed that the teaching materials of inquiry instructional strategy,which integrating into translations among representions with significant effect, the specific effect is summarized as follows: Ι、The experiment group performed significantly better than the control group in learning effect in Torque unit. Ⅱ、The experiment group performed significantly better than the control group in The conceptual changing in Torque uni. VI Ⅲ、The situation of the translations among representations for the experimental group:(a) the success rate of the translating is lower than others in the form translating to other characterization and the other characterization translating to form (b) the students using the wrong relationship proportional of mathematical resulting in translation failure (c) when the experimental group students translate the verbal and in-kind pictorial of operation (pictorial) to the form and mathematical characterization, the most of students who translate successfully use the graphical to improve the success rate of translation, the translation process is that the verbal(pictorial) translates to graphical which re-translated to the table (mathematics) (d) the translation success rate of the same type of will be subject to the influence of the degree of difficulty of the characterization itself. Have a significant impact on the mathematical characterization. For the same concept, translated back and forth between different representations contribute to the development of the complete concept. The materials of this study can indeed improve the success rate of the characterization Translation.
