Modern astronomical observation is popular and common but is performed in a passive way. Moreover, there is lack of a convenient and user-friendly interface to imitate and interact with an astronomical system for both of professionals at research laboratories and amateurs in a planetarium museum. The difficulty of developing such a system is due to several reasons. First of all, the distance between observed objects and observer is extremely far away. Second, the data scale of astronomical observation is tremendously large, because these data is generally accumulated from a long period of time and work. In addition, there are many different types of astronomical data, such as temperature, mass and density, from different physical sources, such as radiation and electromagnetic field, etc. It is difficult to visualize and understand these data without an efficient UI. Finally, the hardware also limits the representing way of virtual horoscopes. In order to solve the above-mentioned issues, we propose a practical approach for users to visualize and interact with astronomical data by adopting Kinect, OpenNI, and texture mapping techniques. In addition, our system enables users to observe the virtual horoscopes without the projection limitation of a flat and smooth surface.
