On the 'Book of Rites • Record of Learning' and Its Implications for Moral Education in the Elementary School

The purpose of this thesis was to discuss the ethics and educational principles of the Confucian school, and applied them for moral education in the modern elementary school. Basing on the 18th section of Book of Rites, Record of Learning, the author explored the Confucian’s point of view of “whole-person”, which had emphasized the moral education should be starting from childhood. Moreover, the thesis pointed out the importance of cultivating our children’s characters and improving the moral education in the school, and then looked forward to solving the problems of disorder in our society. Using the research methods of literature review and field observation, the thesis tried to analyze the sameness and differences from ancient to modern, and proposed some applications for moral education in the elementary school. The content included 7 Chapters as following. Chapter One was motivation, purpose and methods of the research. Chapter Two reviewed “Book of Rites • Record of Learning” and introduced the author, background and highlights of the classics. Chapter Three focused on the roles of teachers and educational purposes, principles and instructions in “Book of Rites • Record of Learning”. Chapter Four discussed the background and chances of moral education in the modern elementary school, then analyzed the difficulties of moral education among three dimensions of society, school and family. Inspiring from “Book of Rites • Record of Learning”, Chapter Five explored “whole-person” ethics of Chinese tradition and application for moral education in our society. Chapter Six presented the moral education policies and guiding principles of Ministry of Education, New Taipei City Education Department, and New Taipei City Tucheng Elementary School. Besides, the author reviewed and generalized the instructions of moral education in the class. Finally, Chapter Seven concluded the discussions above and made some suggestions for moral education in the elementary school and future research.
