Optical simulation and practical study of D-type optical fiber sensor

In this study, we discussed D-type optical fiber sensor's sensitivity according to thickness of the gold film deposited by DC sputtering. The trends of reflective spectra resulting from surface plasma resonance (SPR) were observed when covering different refractive index of liquids on the gold films. The spectra of SPR were simulated by software of optical thin film with different thicknesses of gold films, refractive index of liquids, and the incident angles. The better intensity of spectra reflected from the gold films were found by the SPR simulation. Then, the numbers of times of total reflection were calculated by geometrical optics because incident light traces in the D-type optical fibers having different incident angles resulting from different curvatures and side-polished depths. Moreover, there are four different fiber curvature, five side-polished depth, six thicknesses of gold films, and seven refractive index of liquids to be together evaluated by the above two simulations. Ranging the better parameters conducted the practical experiments for the D-type optical fiber sensors. We made twelve samples with different side-polished parameters and with different coated thicknesses of gold films. After evaluating the sensitivities by measuring the different index of liquids, the best sample having the highest sensitivity confirmed successfully the accuracy of the optical simulation results.
