The pediatric examination academic thoughts of “Pediatircs priciple, Xiao Er Xe” written by Zhang Jing-Yue are derived from the “Great Treatise on the Correspondences and Manifestations of Yin and Yang”. The main principles of examining children are exterior and interior, cold and heat, vacuity and repletion. Zhang proposed pulse examination, qi of physical form, and status illness to be the key points of vacuity-repletion pattern identification. Zhang’s treatment theory of each disease was deeply influenced by Qian Yi (author of Key to “Diagnosis and Treatment of Children''s Diseases”in Song dynasty) and Xue Ji (author of “Fundamentals Of Internal Medicine”in Ming dysnasty). Zhang integrated not only his ingenious therapeutic concepts, the yin-yang and life-gate theory, and formulations, but also his predecessors’. Zhang’s unique step in treating fright wind is to secure the true yin. The treatment principle of fright and sudden fear is to recover spirit qi; and of fright crying is to quiet the spirit and nourish qi. Zhang also invented secure center qi and resolve the exterior to treat external contraction fever; eliminate heat with warmth and sweetness to treat internal fever’s true yin vacuity heat. The treatment principle of children’s vacuity cold vomiting and diarrhea is to recuperate spleen and stomach in the upper and center burner or regulate spleen and kidney if the lower burner is involved. There is often true heat in pediatric gan pattern, but dual vacuity of qi and blood, yin vacuity-false heat, dual vacuity of spleen and kidney appears quiet often, too. Zhang put a great deal of emphasis on spleen-stomach-vacuity-cold and spleen-kidney-vacuity-cold formula which is the characteristics of his remarkable prescription and administration. His formula design is based on Four-Gentlemen-Decoction, Center-Rectifying Decoction and Yin-Rectifying Brew. In conclusion, the academic thoughts on pediatrics proposed by Zhang Jing-Yue 165 put much emphasis on spleen-kidney supplementation. Zhang’s theory serves as a clinical and theoretical guideline for phsysians nowadays.
