Preliminary Study on Simplified Algorithm for simulation of Moisture Buffering Materials

Taiwan is located in a hot and humid climate; dampness in buildings leads to significant microbial pollution and damages the buildings. The main object of this research is Douglas Fir. We consider the vapor transfer phenomenon of building materials as well as temperature/humidity and energy consumption inside a building. We use the EnergyPlus program, which is developed by DOE, to simulate the indoor moisture variation in a one-zone residential unit, based on the Effective Moisture Penetration Depth Method, which is more suitable for practical building design processes. Results: 1. According to the simulation results, we can confirm that EMPD in EnergyPlus can be used to simulate the moisture of the building materials, and the software can be used without high operative skill and is beneficial for the designer in practical applications. 2. The use of Douglas Fir for interior building materials with the moisture capacity can reduce the indoor humidity to achieve the effect of humidity buffering and the phenomenon of high humidity over 80%. It can also reduce the growth of microorganism, which would enhance the indoor air quality. 3. Taking two moisture partitions as the reference standard, it can enhance the frequency of occurence of optimum humidity range from 40 to 70% while increasing moisture partitions areas;the more air changes per hour, the indoor moisture will rise.
