The emergency department of a hospital is one of the most complex departments. At any time, medical personnel might face emergency surgeries or procedures. Effective allocation of medical resources for the triage system is thus of primary importance and should be a priority for management. The goal should be to promote the best overall operating performance and quality. In January of 2010, the “Five-triage System” was implemented based on a policy decision by Taiwan’s Medical Institution. The goal was to effectively prioritize and allocate resources in ways to improve emergency care. Therefore, this study used a simulation of both a five-triage and four-triage system and attempted to assess. The model hospital in this study is a local hospital in central Taiwan and we used the eM-Plant8.1 simulation software to construct different levels of the triage model in order to assess performance. Our results show that the five-triage system has better overall operating performance for emergency care, and it is recommended for medical institutions.
