According to medical reports, the intake of too much high-calorie foods will cause accumulation of cholesterol and triglycerides; and high cholesterol, coronary heart disease and atherosclerosis status hardening are closely related to each other. Polygonatum altelobatum Hayata is a well known Formosan endemic plant and has been used as a tonic herbal drug in Taiwan. The present study is to investigate the hypolipidemic effect of aqueous ethanolic extract of rhizomes of Polygonatum altelobatum Hayata (PAHE) on high-fat diet induced hyperlipidemia in Syrian hamsters. The biochemical and histopathological evaluations were carried out after administration of PAHE for 4 weeks. The result revealed that there was no significant difference in body weight and food intake of rats. The PAHE possessed significant decrease in total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and increase in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. In addition, increase of fecal excretion of cholesterol and decrease of intestinal cholesterol absorption were also found after treatment of PAHE for 4 weeks. In case of safety evaluation, there are no apparent abnormal histopathology changes in the liver and kidney of rates fed with PAHE for 4 weeks. The overall results indicate that PAHE is a safe functional food with ameliorating hyperlipidemia.
