The Discourse Analysis about the Word 'TO' in University English Major Students' Creative English Writing in Taiwan

There are two main dimesions of the word “to“ : the infinitives and the prepostion “to“. The word “to“ is usually used in EFL students‘ English writings. The researcher analyzed 108 EFL students‘ English writings to reach a better understandings of the word “to“ in Taiwan. The data are collected form 108 EFL students who wrote creative Englsih writings by a four-picture page. The thesis both adopts quantitative and qualitative methods to do the research. The collected data are diveded in eleven groups randomly in oreder to find the use frequency of the word “to“. The thesis also analyzed the use frequency of the main two dimensions of the word “to“ : the infintives and the preposition “to“ and the situations of the semantic use in both two parts. The thesis also analyzed the errors that EFL studens made about the word “to“. The findings showed that in EFL student participants‘ English writings, of the randomely divided data, the word “to“ showed on average 26 times in 1000 words so the word “to“is usually used in EFL students‘ Englsih writings. The findings also showed that the use frequency of the infintives and the preposition “to“ of the two main dimensions of the word “to“ is half and half and English teachers should emphasize both dimensions of word “to“. The semantic type of the preposition “to“ which means the direction of something and torwards something is found to be used around 52% of total preposition “to“ and the use frequency is high. It may have resulted from the picture the researcher used. So when Englsih teachers want to exam the writing abilty of the EFL students, the pictures need to be thoughtfully selected. The main error which EFL students made in the infintives is that they did not follow the basic rule of the infinitives which is “to+RV.“ It should be taught by English teachers carefully.
