The study aims to examine reentry experiences including re-adaptation process and re-interaction with close friends of Taiwan sojourners. Furthermore, the study attempts to figure out what kind of communication difficulties they had been struggled and the strategies they used for solving these communication difficulties. Based on grounded theory, in-depth interview is used in the study. Researcher gathered 10 respondents groups, each group composed by 1 sojourner and 1 sojourner’s close friend, and interviewed every respondent separately. 5 main communication difficulties were put forward by sojourners and their close friends. The communication difficulties including “complain about their lives ”, “contact model shift”, “lack of meta communication”, “language transformations”, and “drop of expectation to each other”. Besides, to cope with these communication difficulties, sojourners employ “embrace”, “passive accept”, and “active interaction” strategies which correspond to Adler’s “proactive” and “re-socialized” coping styles. On the other hand, sojourner’s close friends use “actively cooperate”, “cultural re-education”, “Reflection accept”, and “neglect” strategies which can classified to “proactive”, “re-socialized”, and “alienated” coping styles. The study not only confirms that communication plays a key role for sojourner’s re-adaptation, but also find out re-adaptation happened both on sojourners and close friends by each other’s intrapersonal communication and by interpersonal communication.
