Characteristics and Application of Multi-domain Cholesteric Liquid Crystal doped with Nanopraticles

Popis: | 100 This work presents a novel technology to make a broadband cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) device with a multi-domain structure and a reversibly tunable multi-wavelength laser from dye-doped cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) cell incorporating the self-assembled polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) nanoparticles. The aggregation pattern of the self-assembled POSS nanoparticles depends on the concentration of POSS doped in the mixture of POSS/CLC and the cooling rate of the mixture from a temperature higher than the clear point. Based on the aggregation-induced clustering and networking properties of the POSS nanoparticles in the CLC device, and on the POSS-induced homeotropic alignment, the existence of POSS aggregation in the CLC layer forms a multi-domain structure, this achieving a broadband bistable CLC device. Furthermore, Due to the multi-domain CLC structure can be realized by aggregation of the POSS nanoparticles in the LC cell, multi-wavelength lasing can be easily achieved by controlling the self-organization process of POSS/CLC mixture. The effects of POSS-doped concentration and cooling rate on the multi-wavelength lasing were investigated. The number of lasing wavelengths can be tuned by the fabrication conditions. |
