The impact of energy crisis is striking human beings under massive usage of energy. Since alternative energy sources have not been well established for large scale usage, it is crucial to determine suitable energy-saving countermeasures to reduce the level of energy consumption. Therefore, this thesis presents a design for the development of a wireless power monitoring system using an intelligent power outlet. The proposed system continually measures and records the energy consumption of electrical devices and transmits the data to a monitoring computer via a ZigBee wireless sensor. Commands are transmitted from the monitoring computer to the intelligent power outlet to control electrical devices. The functions of the proposed intelligent power outlet system include standby power management, current limiting, wireless turn on and off, power consumption monitoring, load waveform capturing, and plug-and-play capability. Users can set the function parameters using the interface software installed on the monitoring computer. A simulation of the proposed system is developed to observe electrical device usage and verify the system feasibility. It is anticipated that measuring and recording energy consumption of electrical household devices may stimulate people’s energy conservation motivaiton. By using the functions above, this system can reduce carbon emissions and enhance the convenience of energy management.
