In this thesis, IEC 61850 communication techniques have been presented to apply in the microgrid protective systems. In nature, the microgrid is embedded with distributed generation systems, such as diesel engine generators and solar systems. Furthermore, batteries are also introduced to store energy for peak power sharing. The whole system is explored by using Matlab/Simulink. Microgird can be operated either in the island mode or connected mode and must be under protected in anytime. Therefore, how to design an effectively protective system for microgrid system is mainly key issue in this thesis. Since the microgrid can be dynamically operated with uncertainly generation and loading. A novel IEC 61850 base Protective Management System (PMS) associated with GOOSE functionality Intelligent Electronic Device (IED) is proposed. The linear programming method has been implemented to relay optimizing settings. Such that relay settings can be adaptively updated follow system condition change to maintain the relays all with well coordination. To demonstrate the proposed idea, the Matlab/Simulink is also used to perform fault analysis of microgrid system. The simulation results shows that it is very difficult to maintain relay coordination if using traditional protection scheme. However, the proposed PMS associated with GOOSE functionality IED is not only optimized the relay settings, but also can always adaptively accommodate the system change.
