In this thesis, 2,2'-bipyrimidine (2bpm) was used as a ligand in reactions of Co2+ ion and flexible carboxylate ligands under hydrothermal conditions to produce metal – organic coordination polymers. The synthetic method, structures and physical properties of these products were investigated. Carboxylate including 3,3′,4,4′-benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPTDA), 4,4′-oxydiphthalic anhydride (ODPA), 3,3′,4,4′-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA), 3,3′,4,4′-diphenylsulfonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (DSTDA), 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride (6FDA), were employed in the present investigation. We obtained four 2-D coordination polymers, {[Co2(2bpm)(C17H6O9)(H2O)6] ‧ 5.5H2O}n (1), {[Co2(2bpm)(C16H6O9)] ‧ H2O}n (2), {[Co2(2bpm)(C16H6O8)(H2O)4] ‧ 2H2O}n (3), {[Co2(2bpm)(C16H6O10S)(H2O)4] ‧ 5H2O}n (4), and two 3-D coordination polymers, {[Co2(2bpm)(C19H6O8F6)(H2O)4] ‧ 2H2O}n (5), {[Co2(2bpm)(C19H6O8F6)(H2O)5] ‧ 4H2O}n (6). Due to different types of internal groups, the metal ions coordinated to the ligands in different modes. In this study, the synthetic strategies, X-ray structures, thermal stability and physical properties of the synthesized coordination polymers were examined. Structural variation, particularly different flexible carboxylate conformation, makes these metal – organic frameworks interesting supramolecules.
