The relationship of Network Position, Tie Strength, Leadership and Academic Experience to Knowledge Creation

Social network has gained recent popularity as a means for established individuals to learn about new knowledge and enhance knowledge creation. However, the link between such social structure and the impact of leadership and experience on the knowledge creation process has not been examined in detail. For fill this gap, this paper used longitudinal data from scholars in academic fields and investigated the conditions under which maintenance of social structures affects knowledge creation process. Two regression models were used to test the hypotheses in a sample of 427 individuals and 3,356 observations of knowledge creation. The results showed, First, the results showed that the centrality position and tie strength has an inverted U-shaped relationship with quantity of knowledge creation performance. Second, the centrality position has an inverted U-shaped relationship with quality of knowledge creation while tie strength has direct relationship with knowledge creation quality, it means interaction frequency would positively influence knowledge quality. Third, academic experience and leadership provides direct effect of knowledge creation. Finally, in the moderating effect discussion, experience and leadership would provide positive moderate effect in quality of knowledge and negative moderate effect in quantity of knowledge. The results investigated the tradeoff relationships between quality and quantity of knowledge creation. Overall, the results of this study extension the existed social network theory, in addition to investigated the particular phenomena in academic network and also can be extended to the practical application of business management. The theoretical and empirical implications of this paper are discussed in the conclusion.
