Action Research on Cultivating the 2nd Grade Pupils'Global-Perspective Knowledges and Attitudes through Cultural Festival Learning

Popis: | 100 The purpose of this study is cultivate the 2nd grade pupils’ global-perspective knowledges and attitudes through cultural f estival instruction. 26 pupils in the elementary school received a 6-month 2-stage learning program which covered four cultural festivals--“Thanksgiving”, ”Christmas”, ”Chinese New Year”, and “Qingming”. With the method of action research, the researcher wants to identify the properness of the program and the effect of instruction. The main findings are as the followings: 1. Marking good use of the map of the world as classroom decoration may inspire the pupils’ global perspectives. 2. The program seems to be proper to the 2nd graders. It can be further phrased in the four-festival context: (1) Through “Thanksgiving”, pupils learned some peoples in the world suffer from food shortage, and the pupils learned to cherish their wellbeing, and are willing to express their concerns as global citizens for the poor in remote area. (2) Through celebrating the saint’s birthday on “Christmas”, the pupils learned to respect each person’s dignity. The pupils stretched their helps to the students of the special classes by teaching them how to sweep the floors in the campus. (3) Though”Chinese New Year”, the pupils learned to appreciate the various celebrating customs of many countries when they come to New Year’s Day. The pupils are willing to share their happiness by participating in decorating Their houses and shooting the foreign students’ smiling faces in the campus. (4) Through the various memorial rituais of the Chinese Qingming Festival, the pupils learned to tolerate different faiths of different religious groups, to show filial piety to their parents and the elders. And they took part in cleaning the community park as a way of caring the global environment. 3.
