Numerical Study of Vortex Characteristics near Green Island Water

Vortex shedding due to flow past an obstacle is numerically studied. The numerical model is a space-time least-squares finite-element method based on the vertically-averaged shallow-water equations. Simulation of constant current and standing wave in a flat channel is first performed to validate the model. The model is then used to simulate flow past a cylinder. Characteristic of vortex shedding, e.g., spatial length and temporal period of vortex is illustrated. The model is then applied to study wake vortex dynamics due to Kuroshio past the Green Island. It is found the spatial scale, aspect ratio and non-dimensional width, closes to value of an observed von-Kármán street of a satellite image, and temporal scale agrees well with most computed value at Reynolds number Re = 200.
