Study of Keelung Islet Ecotourism Development and Its Potential Analysis

In recent years, ecotourism is the main source of income in many islands. Thus, proper planning and operation management, have been a subject of international concern to demonstate an island's unique ecology and culture. Keelung Islet to the north of Taiwan is a distinctive volcanic island landmark, the island is rich in resources, and has ecotourism potential, but due to a lack of proper planning, the number of visitors fell from 90,905 in 2006 to 19,114 in 2010. The non-market valuation method Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) is used to assess the potential and feasibility of developing the Keelung Islet ecotourism. In August and September, 2011, a total of 420 were issued, and 403 being valid questionnaires. Empirical results show that 94.5% of respondents supported the development of Keelung Islet ecotourism, 92% of tourist beleved that comfort and safety of vessels was important; 78% of the visitors responses demonstrated that the landscape was the most important part of the experience; 76% of the visitors wanted to have ocean education included in the tour, and 92% of visitors responsed that there was a need for tourism insurance to be included in the management aspect of the tour. In terms of willingness to pay, 4.7% of the visitors were unwilling to pay and the average Willingness To Pay(WTP) was 342.35 NT dollars. Results of this study imply it is important for future planning of Keelung Islet ecotourism and eco-sustainable philosophy for future generations. The recreational value of the ecotourism on the estimate of Keelung Islet, Keelung Islet with a high degree of development of eco-tourism potential value of the expectations people hold such activities with the participants intention also quite high. Keelung Islet the development of ecotourism activities is bound to complete the planning and management of supporting measures for the sustainable management of environmental resources.
