The early works of Ludwig van Beethoven has carried over the Vienna classical music style and form of Haydn and Mozart and then gradually broke the traditional restriction to explore the unlimited possibility with abundant creative energy incessantly. He successfully gave the tradition of classical music with new life through innovation and was able to express his personal emotion. This made him the most important and most influential musician at the turn of the Classical and Romantic period. The objective of this paper is to investigate the scherzo on Beethoven’s piano sonata. By means of exploring the origin and development of the scherzo to understand the evolution of scherzo and the positioning of Beethoven’s scherzo, further, to explore the background and development of his scherzo by different stages of his music creation, then, to explore the music connotation of the seven piano scherzi of Beethoven by music analysis and playing interpretation, finally to give some advices on playing the music. It was found that the seven piano scherzi of Beethoven have carried over the framework of the minuet, which is generally based on triple time and ternary form. However the brisk and vivid character of Beethoven’s scherzi has been quite different from the elegant minuet. Beside, their contents and expression were a little different along with the creation style of different periods. To play the seven piano scherzi of Beethoven must pay more attention to iii have a control over the tempo, dynamics and the articulations on the music score to be closer to the idea of Beethoven’s scherzi.
