An Action Research on Promoting Teaching Exercises and Games for Young Children in Preschool

This action study goes beyond pedagogy of exercises and games for young children in a private/self-owned preschool to examine the teacher professional growth. The participants of this study contain six preschool teachers, one preschool director and young children in the preschool. This one-year research investigates three questions: (1) What are the processes and methods if given to the opportunity to teach exercises and games for young children? (2) What are the problems and problem solutions while promoting the implementation of teaching exercises and games for young children? (3)Will preschool teachers gain professional growth through teaching exercises and games? The researcher and participants were required to label all their contribution to the discussions, implementations, reflections, modifications and re-implementations. The researcher video taped the actual teaching activities, interviewed sessions as records. These records along with teachers’ meeting records, teaching observation records, notes and classroom documents became the research data. The data then have been organized and analyzed to the following results. The results point the following significant impacts of this scripting approach: I.The processes and methods of teaching exercises and games for young children 1.The principle of preschool as a leader through communication, coordination, and elicitation took a progressive approach to stimulate teacher’s willingness of implementation in practically teaching exercises and games. 2.The strategies of effective professional growth of this action research included (a) study group discussion, (b) practicum, (c) keynote speaker forum, (d) teaching demonstration & observation, (e) peer coaching, and (f) action research meeting. II.The problems and problem solutions while promoting the implementation of teaching exercises and games for young children 1.Administration support offered solutions to the researcher and teachers, such as offering help to the researcher for arranging teaching demonstration and providing sport teaching equipment as well as offering benefits to the teachers for extending and implementing teaching and learning. 2.Scheduled more study group discussion opportunities and arranged peer coaching strategies to enhance teaching quality. III. The impacts of promoting teaching exercises and games for young children 1.The effectiveness of strategies of professional growth: The strategies mentioned as above for preschool teachers to attend. Through the strategies, the teachers gain cognitive development of teaching exercises and games for young children, teaching motivation, reflections and feedbacks, and teaching cooperation. Consequently, teachers gained and enhanced professional growth while participating in action research meetings to design more teaching activities which were more suitable to their children. 2.Teachers: Through the practice and peer coaching, the teachers improved their capability of curriculum design in teaching exercises and games and enhanced their teaching/learning implementation. The teachers concluded that the young children benefited from this scripting approach in their daily routine and their physical development. 3.Young children: Young children enhanced their social interactive capability and became remarkable active in participating class activities. 4.Other’s gain: The teachers will continue to implement this scripting approach into their teaching curriculum and teaching approach toward the development of school-based curriculum of the preschool. Lastly the positive feedback from the parents also recognized the teachers’ efforts. The study concluded that this method is effective and may be the most appropriate for courses with young children. With the positive impacts, the researcher provided constructive suggestions and recommendations to the preschools, preschool teachers and authorities in a hope of promoting a truly integrated exercises and games teaching pedagogy in young children classroom and their daily routine.
