Attitudes towards Learning the Hakka Language among Elementary School Students in Chaozhou -a Non-Hakka Township

The purpose of this study is to understand the attitudes towards learning the Hakka Language among elementary school students in a non-Hakka township. This research adopted the questionnaire survey method, and the self-made “Hakka Learning Attitude Scale of Students” was used as a measure tool. Research objects were the third and fourth graders of elementary schools located in Chaozhou Township, Pingtung County. 295 valid questionnaires were collected. Findings of the research study revealed the following: 1.The overall Hakka learning attitude scale of elementary school students in a non-Hakka township is a medium or high degree. 2.Female students are better than male students in their attitude towards learning Hakka Language. 3.When comparing the attitude towards learning Hakka Language in terms of “the need and goal to learn Hakka”, it was found that students whose father is Hakka have more positive attitude. 4.With regard to “the attitudes towards school Hakka course”, the students whose mother is Hakka have more positive attitude. 5.The attitude among the students who totally understand Hakka is the best. 6.The attitude among the students who can speak Hakka is the best. 7.Family members mainly use Mandarin Chinese to communicate with the participants; apart from Mandarin Chinese, the participants are mostly encouraged to learn English. The specific suggestions based on the conclusion of the study can be used as a future researching reference for schools, teachers, and related educational institutions.
