An Action Research on the Use of Picture Books for Implementing Gender Equity Education – Alternative Family Types as the Theme

Popis: | 100 By employing the method of action research, this study aimed to investigate the teacher’s teaching process while implementing gender equity education based on the theme of alternative family types by using picture books. Teaching students the concept of gender equity, the researcher promoted students’ acknowledgment and acceptance of alternative families and the children from different families. Seven picture books about “family types” were chosen to tie in the curriculum content of gender equity education. The participants consisted of 21 second grade students in Kaohsiung city. The research lasted for 11 weeks with a total class periods of 18. Based on the research results and discussion, the conclusions were as follows: 1. This teaching method can foster the interaction among the lower graders during the process of teaching and learning through the combination of life experience and the story, and thus, the students’ perception of alternative family types was widened. 2. The research demonstrated that teachers can use picture books to implement the gender equity education, and thus, to assist the lower graders in developing the concept and promoting the practice in gender equity. 3. It facilitated lower grades students’ identification to families by employing empathy and positive encouragement during the teaching process. 4. Implementing the curriculum through the action research can further the teachers’ self-reflection, teaching autonomous role, and professional development. Based on the above findings of the study, suggestions were proposed to serve as reference for the teachers, school administrators and future study for designing the curriculum of gender equity education for lower grades students in the future. |
