Study on Therapeutic Effects of Healing Gardenfor Elderly Dementia Patients

| Popis: | 100 Purpose: Dementia was the healthy issue most concerned for elderly recently, especially the severity of the process may produce problem behaviors that affected patient’s quality of life and became a heavy burden for caregivers. This study tried to discuss how a healing garden’s functions and designed characters could benefit dementia patients to increase positive effects for their health, to reduce their problem behaviors, to maintain their residual abilities by means of system review and empirical study. Methods: This article reviewed literatures from 1980 to 2012 to find out functions of healing gardens applied for of people with dementia. Results: A nature landscape and designed characters of a healing garden could reduce drug treatments, depression, problem behaviors. The therapeutic environmental design could help mildly and moderately dementia patients to keep their residual abilities and reduce the stress come from daily life. Consequence of this study implied that using suitable architecture materials, simple looped pathways, distinctive landscapes can decrease patient’s visual hallucinations, lost, and mistake. The multiple species, abundant growth of plants and reminiscent decorations have made a garden with functions to improve a patient’s activity wills by stimulate sensory and autonomy by keep residual abilities. Conclusion:Healing garden was consisted of nature landscape, reminiscence things, multiple species of plant, safety environmental facilities, which designed with therapeutic goals, could provide positive effects of physical and occupational therapy for dementia patients to reduce illness worsen, depression, to postpone physical degeneration, to reduce medical load, and to keep residual abilities. The effects above mentioned will also improve a dementia patient’s physical and mental development positively to have a dignity and better life qualities in old age. |
