This action-research based study aims to investigate how school teachers use Mandarin Daily to carry out the “Newspaper in Education” program as the part of the theme-integrated teaching. The study presents the difficulties that teachers may encounter during the teaching process, and formulates viable solutions and strategies. It also discusses the teachers’ development and reflection during the course of action research. Twenty five students from the researcher’s fifth grade class are the research sample. The students’ performances and responses are recorded during the process of the theme-integrated teaching that incorporates Mandarin Daily as the reading materials. The data for analysis include the researcher’s teaching plan and classroom observation, the students’ worksheets and questionnaires, as well as the comparison between the students’ pre-testing results and post-testing ones. The study’s findings are listed below: 1. Mandarin Daily provides rich reading materials that cover all subjects, so it can be used in the theme-integrate teaching. Its real-time quality and content diversity can complement textbooks for broadening students’ life experiences and equipping the students with more practical knowledge and skills. 2. The theme-integrated teaching that features the “Newspaper in Education” program causes the students’ positive responses in both knowledge and conceptual developments. In-class group discussion also intrigues the students’ interests in learning and sharing opinions, which is the first step to media literacy education. 3. During the action research’s circular process of planning, action, and reflection, the researcher interacts with the students intensively and has the opportunity to further professional development.
