Build-in spindle motors with rated power less than 0.75 kW are often used in small engraving machines, Thermal concerns are always important for high speed spindle motors. The heat from high speed running reduces the efficiency of the motor and the machining accuracy. Not only is the finish quality affected, but also the motor capacity and tool lift time are decreased. In this research, several experiments with different spindle speed of 6k, 9k, and 12k rpm are carried out to evaluate the cooling performance with different housing surface designations. The experiments results show that the temperature of build-in spindle motors with 12k rpm speed is reduced by 9.2℃ and the cooling efficiency is improved from 14.8% to 43.5 %.
