In 2010, the number of inbound visitors exceeded 5.6 million people, hitting record high. According to “2010 Annual Survey Report on Visitors Expenditure and Trends in Taiwan” conducted by Taiwan Tourism Bureau, “food” and “Taiwan’s customs and culture” are among the top three attractions to visit Taiwan for the foreign tourists. Therefore, the translation of the information about these two categories in tourism texts is very important. Thus, the purpose of the study is to explore the strategic variance in translating Sino culture-specific items (CSIs) in tourism texts. All the CSIs in this study are collected from Taiwan Tourism Bureau Official Website and Travel in Taiwan Bimonthly, both of which are conducted by Taiwan Tourism Bureau. The CSIs in this paper are divided into three specific categories: 1) festivals, 2) folklore, and 3) food. The analysis criteria in this thesis are the following ten strategies: 1) transliteration, 2) literal translation, 3) semantic translation, 4) cultural substitution / imitation, 5) paraphrase, 6) omission, 7) substitution, 8) amplification, 9) transliteration + semantic translation, and 10) transliteration + explanation. Through data analysis, this thesis aims to find what are the most and least used translation strategies in each category. Furthermore, these ten translation strategies are classified according to the notion of foreignization and domestication in this thesis. Through data analysis, the thesis also wants to explore which method is favored by the translators in these three categories and the two research subjects, foreignization, domestication, or the combination of both. The findings of this research are summarized as follows. First, in the category of festivals, the most frequently adopted translation strategy is literal translation, and the least adopted strategies are cultural substitution and transliteration + semantic translation. In the category of folklore, the most frequently adopted translation strategy is transliteration + explanation. Omission, cultural substitution, and substitution are not adopted in this category. In the translation of food, literal translation is still the dominant strategy while cultural substitution and substitution are not adopted in this category. Second, domestication method is favored in the category of festivals while the combination of foreignization and domestication is preferred in the categories of folklore and food. Third, domestication method is favored in TTBOW while the combination of foreignization and domestication is preferred in TTB.
